Norman was born in 1922 in Hampstead to Alfred and Sarah Kate née Phillips and had two older siblings Annette and Ian. The Zamek family originated from Poland and settled in Aberdeen where Norman’s siblings Ian and Annette were born. Their father Alfred was heavily involved in forming a synagogue in Marischal Street, Aberdeen. The family then moved to Bournemouth where Norman attended St Adhelm’s Primary school and then Trent Public school. Norman was a very keen sportsman and a Kings Scout.

Norman and his brother Ian joined the RAF and were both killed. Ian died in Germany on 3 October 1940. The Zamek brothers are commemorated with a road named after them in Bournemouth. Family details are on Ian’s page. Zamek, Ian Alexander | The Jews of the RAF

Norman was the pilot of Hurricane BG901 which departed RAF Dum Dum in India on an air test. The aircraft spun into the ground while testing at high speed and was instantly killed. The aircraft being discovered in small bits and he was the first casualty in 135 Squadron due to causes other than operations against the enemy.
