Jack was born on 11 September 1913 at 67 Princess May Road, Stoke Newington to Isaac, an egg merchants’ clerk, and Liebe nee Bamdas. Little is known about the family so please contact us if you can help. The address on his records of 149 Holland Road was a guest house in 1939.

Jack’s first record found is him serving on the ship Regent Panther. Jack was a fourth engineer officer on the ship S.S. Whitford Point which was carrying a cargo of 7840 tons of steel. The ship left Baltimore and arrived in Halifax on 8 December and then left for London. At 01.48 hours on 20 October 1940 the Whitford Point in in convoy HX-79 was hit by one torpedo from U-47 and sank 90 miles southwest of Rockall. The master, 33 crew members and two gunners were lost. Three crew members were picked up by HMS Sturdy and landed at Londonderry.
