Herbert was born on 2 May 1917 in Lubeck, Germany to Selig and Louise Cohn and he had an older brother Siegfried. Little is known about the family life before they came to England. Records show that in 1939 they were living at 111 Brick Lane, Stepney in London and listed as refugees. On the outbreak on war both Selig and Louise were interred in Onchan in the Isle of Man before being released in 1941. Siegfried and Herbert were both sent to internment camps in Canada on S.S. Duchess of York on 21 June 1940 before being released back to England after Herbert enlisted in the Pioneer Corps. Herbert married German born Annelise Feibel in Hendon, Middlesex in 1942.

Research is ongoing to establish the cause of Herbert’s death.
