Israel (Stanley) was born on 24 November 1911 in Sunderland, Durham to Polish born Morris and Latvia born Anna nee Tzinn and was the eldest of five siblings. The family also used the surname Winburn which was officially changed by deed poll in 1944. The family were furniture manufacturers owning the company M. Winburn & Sons in Low Row, Sunderland. Stanley attended Bede Grammar school in Sunderland and is commemorated on their Roll of Honour.
