Ernst was born on 9 November 1906 in Vienna, Austria to Samuel and Malvine nee Fleischmann and he had a younger brother Max. Ernst, who worked as a locksmith, and Max managed to escape from the Nazi regime with Ernst going to England and Max to the United States. Their father died in 1914 and their mother was murdered at Auschwitz.
In 1939, Ernst was listed as living in the Kitchener Camp in Sandwich, Kent and was exempt from internment when he enlisted into the Pioneer Corps.
In August 1940, Ernst was admitted to the District Hospital in Yeovil, Somerset where he died from acute intestinal obstruction and volvulus of the colon.
