Sidney was born in 1922 in Hackney, London to Phineas and Leah nee Shinebaum and he had two younger brothers, Frank and Cyril. Their father became the Beadle and Collector in 1924 of Hambro Synagogue, a job he was still doing in 1939 when the family were living at 4 Creechurch Place, City of London. The family surname was changed to Rose in 1943.

Sidney’s role in the RAF was an instrument repairer. He was on board Catalina FP112 which departed at 14.45 and flew low over the Freetown harbour estuary near Pepel. The port wing struck the water and the aircraft crashed and caught fire killing six on board. Four bodies were recovered.
