Sydney was born on 27 June 1912 in London as Sydney Cohen. Little is known about his family to date apart from an obituary in the Jewish Chronicle from his sister Joy.

Sydney qualified as a doctor in 1935 at St Bart’s Hospital, London and he worked in Portsmouth as an anaesthetist in the Royal Army Medical Corps at the outbreak of war. He met and married Miriam (May) Fogelman in 1936 in Portsmouth and their daughter Angela was born in 1939. During the war in 1940, May and Angela travelled to Chicago and New York, USA to stay with a friend to escape the hostilities.

On 27 July 1944, Sydney was staying in Whitby, Yorkshire when his body was found lying beside his motorcycle on the road. The inquest found that he died due to shock and injuries after being struck by lightening.
