Hyme was born on 4 May 1916 in Stockport to Romanian born Solomon and Annie née Herscovitz and he had a younger brother Jerome. Their father Solomon was the treasurer of the Stockport Hebrew Congregation. In 1939, Hyme was living with his family at 65 Grenville Street, Stockport where his father Solomon ran a drapery shop and Hyme was working as his assistant. Hyme was an active community worker and served on the Jewish Effort Committee and the Refugee Committee.

Hyme married Bella Stross in 1942 two months before he was killed. Bella remarried in 1945 to Lewis Hyman and they emigrated to Australia.

Hyme was the navigator on Halifax W1096 which departed RAF Beaulieu on a day cross country training exercise. The mid-upper gunner inadvertently fired a number of rounds into one of the engines causing total hydraulic failure. The aircraft went into a spin and crashed at Wicken Bonhunt, Essex killing four of the crew. The Court of Inquiry stated, ‘Mid Upper gunner whilst fooling with guns fired burst into port inner engine which immediately caught fire…aircraft went into flat spin to port’.
