Sydney was born 18 January 1919 in Glasgow to Samuel and Dora née Sandground. Sydney’s grandfather Solomon was born in Verballen, Poland and became a naturalised British subject in 1891. He lived in Edinburgh where he worked as a jeweller. Sydney’s parents Samuel and Dora moved to Glasgow where they had four children, Bertram who married Eleanor Raphael, Flora who married Cecil Michaels, Yvonne who married Isaac Hanniford and Sydney.

Sydney was an air gunner on Whitley EB346 which departed RAF Whitchurch Heath on a night navigation exercise at 21.39. Flying over Yorkshire the port engine failed, the pilot feathered the propeller on this engine but later lost control. The aircraft then crashed at 23.44 around a mile to the north east of the village of Fridaythorpe on the Yorkshire Wolds. All the crew were killed.
