Samuel was born on 14 September 1916 in Mile End, London to Polish parents Woolf and Sarah nee Lent. He was an only child and his father died aged 23 years when Samuel was only a year old.
In 1939, Samuel was living with his widowed mother and her sister in Hackney. Sarah worked as a dressmaker’s machinist and Samuel was a ladies’ tailor.
Samuel was killed in the first Battle of El Alamein.
