Lili was born on 18 Sep 1921 in Lodz, Poland the daughter of Adolf and Sophie Bankier. Lili and her mother emigrated to Palestine in 1935 and her father remained in Lodz. He was there when the German forces invaded Poland in 1939 and was incarcerated in the ghetto where he died of heart failure in 1942. Sophie ran a small hotel in Ein Karem a neighbourhood of Jerusalem.

Lili enlisted as a WAAF at RAF Ramleh in Sep 1944 and after training she was sent to RAF Heliopolis for meteorological training before being posted to RAF Aqir.
