Charles was born on 26 March 1922 in Hackney to Julius and Marie née Davis and had one older brother Donald. Their grandfather Marks was born in Poland and worked as a furrier and their father Julius worked as a school teacher, firstly in Hackney and then in Egham. Julius pre-deceased Charles by six months.

Charles attended Wembley Hill Elementary School before entering Latymer School in Class 1B on September 13th 1932. He was said to be one of the finest sprinters the school produced. He gained a scholarship to Cambridge and spent the time waiting to join his unit of the R.A.F. teaching languages at the School during its time in Slough.

Charles was the navigator on Lancaster PB416 which took off from Yagodnik, Russia to return to RAF Woodhall Spa after bombing the Tirpitz in Norway on operation Parvane the previous day. The aircraft came off course and crashed in a mountain in the municipality of Nes. The crew were buried in the mountains, but moved down to the local churchyard after the war.
