Michael was born on 11 August 1911 in Thanet, Kent to Morris (Moses) Goldberg, a picture frame maker who was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, and London born mother Adelaide nee Hart and he had an older brother Leslie and an older sister Marion. The family changed their surname by deed poll in 1928 to Gilbert.

Michael married Adelaide Heath in Hackney on 7 September 1932 and the 1939 Register lists them as living at 36 Northfield Avenue in Orpington, Kent and he is working as a commercial traveller for selling hard wood mouldings.

Michael enlisted on 31 July 1941 as a gunner in the Royal Artillery and only served for four months before he died. He was admitted to the Royal Herbert hospital in Woolwich and died from streptococcal septicaemia.
