Isaac, known as Ivan, was born on 15 March 1925 in Hackney, London to Israel and Millie née Solomons and had one sister Norma. Their father Israel was a taxi driver and volunteered as an ARP warden. Ivan worked as a printer from the age of fourteen before volunteering into the RAF.

Ivan was the air gunner in Lancaster NG219 which departed from RAF Witchford on a day operation to Solingen. The aircraft exploded over the target area killing all the crew.
