Emmanuel was born on 22 April 1921 in Harrogate, Yorkshire to Polish born father Henry, who worked as a master furrier, and Leeds born mother Sarah nee Schnofski and he had an older sister Ruth and younger brother Roy. Emmanuel worked as a designer in the tailoring trade and had studied designing in London. At the outbreak of war aged 18 Emmanuel volunteered for the Royal Navy and saw action on the Norwegian coast and was present at the evacuation from Dunkirk. His younger brother Roy was a Bevin boy working in the coal mines and he also sadly died aged 21 in 1946 from gastroenteritis. Emmanuel was a seaman on the ship HMT Almond which had sailed to Tynemouth to have her armament fitted, then to Milford Haven in Wales to commence minesweeping duties with a crew of 20. The ship was returning to Falmouth, Cornwall when she hit a mine at about 2pm and was sunk killing 19 of the crew.
