Samuel was born on 25 June 1917 in St George in the East, London to Ukrainian parents Morris (Moritz) and Yetta nee Darmständler and he was one of seven children.

Samuel worked as a tailor’s machinist and married Doris Don in Hackney, London in 1938. Their only child Kathleen was born in 1939.

Samuel’s youngest brother was Lionel who changed his surname to Bart. Lionel was the famous composer and lyricist who wrote songs for Tommy Steele and Cliff Richard and is most remembered for the show ‘Oliver’.

Samuel death was accidental. His death certificate states ‘Asphyxia due to drowning on July 29 1943 at No. 1 Pond Hampstead Heath when he had a seizure of cramp in the stomach’
