Leonard was born on 10 May 1922 in Rochford, Essex to Poland born father Solomon, a solicitor, and London born mother Lillie nee Sterling and he had a younger sister Helen.

In the 1939 Register, the family were listed as staying at the Sandringham Hotel, Torquay and Leonard was working as an aeronautical engineer.

Leonard was an air engineering officer serving aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Indefatigable when the ship was the subject of a kamikaze attack on 1 April 1945, the first time that the British Pacific Fleet had been attacked in this way. He was one of a dozen casualties, nine of whom – including Leonard – were killed outright with the rest dying of wounds
