‘IN LOVING MEMORY OF BEN WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR HIS COUNTRY’
Ben was born on 17 January 1913 in Edmonton, Middlesex to London born parents Morris and Harriet nee Myers and he was one of seven children. Their father worked as an insurance clerk and in WW1 he was called up to serve in the Durham Light Infantry. But after training at Catterick he was found to have a heart condition and was discharged under medical grounds.
Ben worked as an insurance collector and in 1937 he married Millie Simcovitch at Bevis Marks Synagogue. Their daughter Rosalind was born in 1939.
After enlisting in the Pioneer Corps Ben was sent to Liverpool where he was killed during a bombing raid. The Jewish Chronicle newspaper ran an article describing that he was given full military honours at his funeral.
