Saul was born in 1923 in West Ham, Essex to Maurice and Elizabeth née Cape. Maurice was born in Manchester and was working as a chemist when he enlisted in the Royal Engineers in WW1. He married in 1919 and in 1922 the family moved to London. Saul was the middle son of five brothers. In 1939, the family lived at 34 Kings Drive, Hendon and Saul’s father Maurice worked as a manager at Shell Mex. He was also an A.R.P. warden in Westminster.

Saul was the wireless operator on Lancaster DV195 which departed RAF Syerston at 22.17 hours detailed to bomb Nuremburg, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed at Furth in the north- western suburbs of Nuremburg about 7 kms from the city centre.
