Saul was born on 9 March 1895 in Hackney, London to Emmanuel and Sophia nee Lesser. In 1911, Saul was sixteen, at school and was living with his parents at 19 Navarino Road, Hackney. His father was listed as a property owner and the family had two servants and a coachman. In October 1920 Saul married Erna Keats and their son Anthony Emmanuel was born the following year.

Saul was a military man who served in WW1 in 4th London Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant and by the end of the war he was a captain in the Royal Fusiliers. In 1925 he enlisted into the Auxiliary Air Force. In 1939 Saul was living in Solihull and was enlisted at No 6 Balloon Centre. Saul died from injuries received in a ‘collision with a motor lorry’ at RAF Wythall where he was stationed.

Saul’s son Anthony joined the Merchant Navy as a second radio operator. Tragically he was killed eight months after his father on board the S.S. W.C. Teagle. The ship was carrying 15,000 tons of fuel oil when it was hit by a torpedo at 01.31 hours on 17 Oct 1941 fired by U-558. The ship caught fire and sank about 600 miles west of Rockall. The master, 31 crew members and three gunners were killed. Anthony is commemorated at the Tower Hill Memorial.
