Joseph was born on 22 May 1919 in Shanghai, China to Iraq born parents Solomon and Hannah and he had two brothers. Their father Solomon worked as a broker at the Shanghai stock exchange. Joseph was educated at Clifton College, Bristol and at the age of 17 and a half went to Exeter College at the University of Oxford where he obtained an Honours Degree in Jurisprudence and also a post graduate degree of Bachelor of Civil Law. He became a British Citizen and joined the RAF on 25 October 1940.

Joseph was the pilot of Mitchell FL216 which departed RAF Portreath on an operation to attack Brest-Guipavas aerodrome which was occupied by the Germans. The aircraft was hit by flak and exploded. The bodies of the four crew members fell in the fields around Lanfezic. They are all buried alongside each other in Gouesnou Churchyard, France.
