Henry was born on 5 January 1920 in East London to Samuel and Fanny nee Wagner and he had three siblings. Their father worked in 1921 as a sponge sorter and by 1939 he was a sponge valuer in Hackney, London. Their mother Fanny died in 1933 and their father who had four young children remarried later the same year to Clara Winshank. In 1939, Henry was living with his father at 33 Swingfield House in Hackney and was working in plastic moulding.

Henry enlisted into the Royal Artillery and was a gunner. He died from his wounds in Egypt.
