Sidney was born in 1920 in Croydon to Philip Greenberg and Rachel nee Symons. His father Philip served in the Royal Engineers in WW1 and his papers state that before joining he was working as a photographer. Sidney had one older brother Alexander who served as a Major in the Royal Fusiliers. Alexander was killed on 25 June 1945 serving in the Balkans Campaign. On 30 June 1941 Sidney aged 21, married Mary Robertson in Aberdeen. The marriage certificate states that Mary was a hairdressers assistant and Sidney was a radio shop manager who had already enlisted in the RAF.

Sidney was on board Blenheim BA800 which took off from Canrobert, Algeria at 15.15, to attack Robb Aerodrome, 14km north of Chouigui in Tunisia. The aircraft was shot down by Me109 fighters in or near the target area. The three crew are commemorated on the Malta Memorial.
