Aubrey was born on 20 Feb 1921 in Hackney to Hyman and Elizabeth nee van Coevorden. The family moved to Birmingham where Aubrey attended Moseley Grammar School from 1932 to 1937. Aubrey joined the RAF in 1941, learned to fly in Canada and was commissioned on 9 December 1943. He was rapidly promoted to a Flying Officer in June 1944 and then acting Flight Lieutenant.

He was the second pilot in
Liberator (Commando) II Al504 which took off from RAF Northolt to travel to RCAF Ottawa via the Azores. Named ‘Commando’ the plane was fitted out as a VIP transport and it had carried many high ranking officials, including Prime Minister Churchill. On the 27 March, 1945 the plane went missing over the Atlantic in the vicinity of the Azores.
No trace of the aircraft was ever found and the cause of the disappearance was never able to be determined. Among the officials on board was Commander Rupert Brabner DSO DSC RNVR, Member of the House of Commons and Under-Secretary of State for Air.
