Norman was born on 3 April 1921 in Croydon to Sidney and Jenny née Manches and had a younger brother Derek. The family name was originally Wacholder and they originated from Poland. Norman’s father Sidney served in the Labour Corps in WW1.

In April 1943, Norman married Belgian Annette Freedman in Wandsworth, ten months before he was killed.

Norman was the navigator on Halifax LL244 which departed RAF Elvington on a night operation to Berlin. All the crew were killed.
