Samuel was born on 12 October 1917 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, to Russian born father Maurice (Moshe) and Northumberland born mother Emmeline Hughes and he had five siblings. The family moved to Cardiff, Wales after 1921, and Samuel was educated at South Church Street school followed by Cathedral Road Synagogue classes. In 1939, he was working as a dock labourer in Cardiff and the following year he returned to Newcastle upon Tyne where he married Elsie Allan. Four months after his marriage, on 30 May 1940, he enlisted into the Welsh Guards. Samuel was killed in Italy and is buried in Cassino War Cemetery and has a Cross on his headstone. Evidence has been sent to the CWGC to have his headstone changed to a Star of David. His story can be found on the link below.
