Stanley was born April 1922 in Hampstead, London to Charles and Hilda nee Koppenhagen and he had a younger brother John. Their father worked in the family business manufacturing furs.

Stanley was a second radio operator onboard the steamer ship Stangarth which was on its maiden voyage from New York travelling to Bombay, India via St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and Cape Town. At 18.24 hours on 16 March 1942 the unescorted Stangarth was hit by one torpedo from U-Boat U-504 exploded and sank immediately about 300 miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The master, 39 crew members and six gunners were lost. The U-boat examined the wreckage and discovered that the vessel was carrying ammunition, trucks and aircraft parts destined for Bombay.
