Julius was born on 7 December 1909 in Bradford, Yorkshire to Latvia born parents Phillip and Leah née Sunderland and was one of twelve children of which eleven survived past childhood. In 1890, the Bergson family arrived in Hull and then moved to Bradford where Phillip married Leah in the Orthodox Synagogue. The Bergson family of which Phillip had six siblings, ran a large tailoring firm. In 1911, the family lived at 6 Coleridge Place, Bradford and Phillip is listed as a tailor. By 1921, the family had moved to 8 Spring Bank, Bradford and Julius was attending Belle Vue Secondary school. After his death his family presented a silver cup in his memory for the interhouse football competition to the school. At the age of twenty-five Julius was involved with the Jewish Dramatic Society and was their auditor as well as acting in their productions.

In 1939, Julius was living at Abbots Drive in Chester and was working as a branch manager at Marks and Spencer. By 1941, he had enlisted in the RAFVR and 1065787 LAC Bergson was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on probation (emergency) on 7 September 1941.

Wellington Z8504 departed RAF Portreath, Cornwall for delivery to Malta stopping en route at Gibraltar. After leaving Gibraltar on the night of 19/20 January 1942, Wellington Z8504 crashed at sea off the coast of Ouillis, Cassaigne near Mostaganem (approx 45 miles east of Oran), Algeria. P/O Bergson was killed in the aircraft. F/O Shanahan, F/O Rymal, P/O Gardiner and Sgt Webb survived and landed by dinghy on the coast of Algeria on 26 January 1942. P/O George voluntarily left the dinghy after two days at sea and P/O Gardiner died of hunger and exposure shortly after reaching the shore.

2nd Pilot: Sgt. John Donald Shanahan, R/78324, RCAF, interned. Released by US Forces on 15 Nov 1942 and repatriated to UK.
