Arnold (Abram) was born in 1921 in Newcastle upon Tyne to David and Rose née Davis. Arnold’s father David was a ship surveyor and was working in Hong Kong harbour in 1941. He was killed when his launch exploded on the 12 December, six months after Arnold was killed.

Arnold was a member of the Jesmond Playhouse repertory company before moving to Jersey to become the stage manager of playhouse. He enlisted in the RAF at Cardington in 1940.

Arnold was the wireless operator/air gunner on Hampden P4310 which departed from RAF Waddington on a night operation to Soest. The aircraft was shot down and crashed at Oberwerries, Germany.
