Benjamin was born in 1920 in Edmonton, Middlesex to Leopold and Margaret née Bacon and he had an older sister Phyllis. His father Leopold served in the King´s Royal Rifle Corps in WW1 and worked as a diamond polisher.

Benjamin enlisted into the RAF in May 1940. Four months before he was killed on 6 June 1942, Benjamin was an air gunner on Stirling W7508 which departed from RAF Lakenheath on a night operation to Essen. The aircraft was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed SW of Tienen, Belgium killing six of the crew with one captured and Benjamin evading through the Comet Line.

On 2 October Benjamin was on Stirling R9167 which departed from RAF Lakenheath on a night operation to Krefeld. The aircraft was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Kronenberg, near Venlo, Holland. All the crew were killed.
