Louis was born in 1923 in Hackney, London to Benjamin and Esther nee Vas Nunes. His grandparents Moses and Rose were born in Amsterdam. Louis’s father Benjamin died when he was five in 1928. In 1939, the family lived at Mount Pleasant Lane in Hackney. Louis was the youngest of three children who lived with their widowed mother. Older brothers Benjamin, a gents hairdresser and Isaac, a warehouseman. His sister Sarah worked as a dress machinist.

Louis was the flight engineer on Stirling EJ113 which departed RAF Mildenhall on a night operation to Mannheim. The aircraft was shot down by night fighter pilot Oberfeldwebel Reinhard Kollak of the 8./NJG 4 and crashed at Bussy le Château, France killing all eight crew.
