Ian was born on 27 February 1918 in Aberdeen to Alfred and Sarah Kate née Phillips and had an older sister Annette and a younger brother Norman who was also killed in India serving in the RAF. Zamek, Norman | The Jews of the RAF

The Zamek family originated from Poland and settled in Aberdeen where their father Alfred was heavily involved in forming a synagogue in Marischal Street, Aberdeen. The family then moved to Bournemouth where Ian attended St Adhelm’s Primary school and then Trent Public school.

The Zamek brothers are commemorated with a road named after them in Bournemouth.

Ian was the observer on Whitley N1434 which departed RAF Linton-on-Ouse for an operation to Frankfurt. The aircraft was lost over Germany killing all the crew.
