Murray was born in 1922 in Leeds to Norman and Leah née Freedman. In 1939, the family were living at 95 Gathorne Terrace, Leeds and Norman was working as a foreman in the tailoring trade on government work.

Murray was the wireless operator on Wellington BK242 which departed from RAF Finningley on a day training exercise. The aircraft crashed attempting to overshoot killing all the crew:
