David was born on 13 May 1914 in Mile End Old Town, London to Polish born parents Harry and Annie nee Jesky and he had an older sister Rae and an older brother Alfred. Their father Harry was a mantle manufacturer and both David and Alfred were commercial travellers for the company. On 23 December 1939 David married Irene Evershed.

David was killed when he was on duty riding in a military carrier which overturned due to a broken track on the highway in Upavon, Pewsey on the edge of Salisbury Plain. He sustained a fracture of the skull in the accident which was ruled a misadventure.
