Maurice was born in July 1921 in Sculcoates, Yorkshire to Jonah Shibko and Adelaide née de Meza. Maurice’s grandparents Abraham and Sarah originated from Poland. Maurice’s father pre-deceased him in 1933. Maurice was Jewish but a cross was requested by the family for his headstone.

Maurice was an air gunner on Wellington X3741 which departed RAF Upper Heyford on a training flight when it crashed at the Otmoor bombing range.
