Lawrence was born on 19 May 1911 in Cheetham, Manchester to Maurice who was born in Mikerlince in Austria and whose surname was originally Cohen, and Rose Leah nee Radnansky who was listed as being born in Nowajilkow, Austria. Maurice, who worked as a tailor and as a rag dealer, and Rose had five children. Lawrence the eldest, followed by Fanny who died in infancy, Sidney, Henry and Netta. In 1939, the family were living at 11 Avondale Street in Cheetham and both Maurice and Rose were listed as exempted from enemy alien internment.

Lawrence attended Waterloo Road Junior school in Cheetham and after finishing school he worked as a french polisher. He married Bella Marks in 1935 at the New Synagogue in Cheetham, Manchester and they had two sons born in 1936 and 1941.

He attested into the Royal Artillery in 1940 and was sent to fight in the Western Desert, Middle East Theatre of War. He was reported as missing on 29 June 1942 and on 10 October 1942 he was reported as being a prisoner at POW Camp 82, 3200 Laterina near Arezzo. Records state that he was shot at the hands of the Germans on 5 May 1944.
