David was born 29 Mar 1921 in Bulawayo the son of Abraham and Miriam Lewis. David’s parents were both born in London and were married in Hackney in 1917. They moved to Bulawayo before 1921.

David was the pilot of Baltimore AG799 which was on a training exercise. The aircraft crashed 18 miles south of Marsabit, Kenya after it flew at a height lower (under low lying cloud) then ordered by the Flight Commander. All crew were killed. The crew were:
