Hyman was born on 25 May 1923 in Whitechapel to Manchester born Isaac and Blanche née Bercovitch. Hyman’s grandparents originated from Poland and the family worked in the tailoring industry. In 1939, the family lived at 3 Marshall Place, Manchester where Isaac is listed as a costume and mantle tailor and Blanche is a button hole machinist. Hyman enlisted into the RAF at Padgate at the end of 1942.

Hyman was the flight engineer on Lancaster LL904 which departed from RAF Dunholme Lodge on an operation to Schweinfurt. The aircraft crashed near Oppenau, Germany. Flight Sergeant F.Young, RNZAF, was the only survivor and was taken POW.
