Jacob was born on 17 March 1923 in Prestwich, Lancashire to Russian parents Azriel and Jessie nee Chinn and he had an older brother and two younger sisters. Azriel served in the 4th London Battalion in WW1 and in later years he was an organist, composer and choirmaster and was heavily involved with the Yiddish theatre in Manchester.

Jacob worked as a warehouseman and was a collector in the Synagogue. Jacob enlisted into the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and was serving when he died.

He died at Crumpsall Isolation hospital, Manchester and his death certificate states his cause of death was: Tuberculous Bronchopneumonia and Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
