Harold was born in 1924 in Mile End, London to Sam Lazar (known as Charles) and Julia née Kreeger and he had two younger brothers Ivan and Teddy. Their father Sam worked as a master furrier in Stepney.

Harold was the wireless operator on Lancaster W4890 which departed RAF Lindholme on a daylight navigation training exercise. The aircraft was seen to emerge from a cloud in a spin and on fire. It crashed near Thorney Island airfield, Hampshire killing all the crew.
