Leo was born on 15 May 1907 in Montreal, Canada to Polish parents Bernard and Berta nee Schlanger. His parents married in Poland and then moved to Canada where Leo was born and then they returned to Poland before 1909 where Leo’s younger brothers Simon and Sasha were born. The family returned to England where Bernard worked as a glass importer. Both Leo and his brother Sasha worked as salesmen for their father’s company.

Leo enlisted into the Army working in the Intelligence Corps and in 1940 he married Winifred Whitling with their daughter Judith born the following year.

Leo died at the Military Hospital, Shenley, in Hertfordshire on 24 May 1943. His death certificate states that his cause of death was (a) Meningitis and (b) Brain left frontal lobe abscess of Posterior Ethmoid with infection.
