Joseph was born on 21 April 1882 in Thirsk, Yorkshire to Polish father Abraham and Dinah nee Frenkel who was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and he had three brothers and two sisters. In 1891 the family lived at 25 Millgate in Thirsk where Abraham worked as a boot and shoe dealer.

Joseph’s military service saw him serve in the Boer War when he was barely twenty years old, followed by serving in the Sussex Regiment as a Captain in WW1 where he was stationed in Egypt and Salonika and finally in the RAFVR where he served as a pilot officer.

Joseph married Esta Joseph in 1915 at the Great Synagogue in Leeds and their only child Charles John was born in 1917. After serving in WW1, Joseph and his family lived in Hendon. The 1921 Census shows them living at 8 Wycombe Gardens and Joseph was working as an export and import merchant. Further information will be available soon.
