Jack was born on 1 Aug 1920 to Jacob and Jane née Costello of Guildford, Surrey and had a younger sister Yvonne. Jack’s grandfather Pinkus was born in Warsaw and arrived in England in the 1890’s. Jack’s father Jacob served in the 9th Royal Fusiliers and was discharged after being wounded. Jacob’s brother Albert was killed in 1917 in France.
