Harold was born in 1921 in Marylebone, London to South African Bertie and Phyllis née Blaiberg and he had an older sister Beryl. Their mother died two months after Harold was born and their father who was a co-director of a gown makers in Hendon died in 1940. Harold’s sister Beryl Annette volunteered as an ARP warden.

Harold was the wireless operator/air gunner on Halifax BB216 which departed RAF Topcliffe at 23.03 for a night operation to Saarbrucken. As the aircraft crossed the coast the port outer engine caught fire. Although the fire was put out it caused the engine to fail and the order was given to bale out.

Nav, Edgar Bohun Mason, survived. The Operations Record Book states that he had to swim 2 hours to shore.
