Israel was born on 22 April 1922 in London to Isaac and Annie née Borek. Israel’s headstone states he has sisters and a brother. Research into his life and family in ongoing.

Israel was the wireless operator/air gunner on Lancaster JB116 which departed from RAF Bardney on a night operation to attack the flying-bomb storage depot at St Leu. The cause of the aircraft loss has not been established and it crashed near Millebosc killing four of the crew and the other three became prisoners of war.
