Hyman was born on 19 Jan 1911 in Cardiff, Wales the son of Russian born Reuben and Ukrainian born Annie nee Kitchener. Hyman was the eldest of six children and in 1911 the family were living in Augusta Street, Roath, Cardiff where Reuben ran a drapery store.

Hyman and Lilian married in Cardiff in 1936 and their son Michael was born in Cannock, Staffordshire in 1937. The 1939 register states that the family were living at 68 Market Street in Cannock, Staffordshire where Hymie ran a general drapers shop.

Hyman was the navigator on Stirling BK813 which departed from RAF West Wickham on a night operation to Wuppertal. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at Haasrode, Belgium killing six of the crew.
