Henry was born on 2 January 1909 at 41 Rutherglen Road, Glasgow in Scotland to Belarus born father Abraham and Eva nee Caplan and he was the eldest of eight children. Their father Abraham was a tailor and in 1921 the family lived at 22 Warwick Street a notorious area in the heart of the Gorbals, Glasgow.

Little is known of Henry’s early life. He attested into the Royal Artillery in 1940. He was stationed in Iraq when he died and his records state that he died from carcinoma of the left lung. The graves at Basra War Cemetery have sadly been destroyed and a two volume Roll of Honour listing all casualties buried and commemorated in Iraq has been produced and are on display at the CWGC’s Head Office in Maidenhead.
