Barnett was born with the surname Aarons on 16 February 1917 in Dulwich to John Aarons and Sarah nee Harris. John and Sarah married at the New Synagogue, Bishopsgate in 1908 and had four children, Abraham, Myer, Miriam and Barnett. John served in WW1 in the Army Service Corps.
