Gordon was born on 11 Feb 1920 in Anfield, Liverpool to Julius and Esther (nee Alexander) Rosenthal. Gordon had an older brother Maurice and three younger siblings Abraham, Leslie and Ena. Gordon was a keen sportsman who represented Liverpool in swimming as a schoolboy and he signed for Tranmere Rovers Football Club in 1937 turning professional in 1939.

Gordon took off in Spitfire N3276 on 8 Feb 1942 when the aircraft stalled, spun and crashed into River Dee at Saltney Ferry, near Hawarden. He was knocked unconscious and drowned in shallow water.
