Sidney was born on 21 December 1923 in Leeds, West Yorkshire and he was the second oldest of four boys born to Louis and Rachel nee Saffer. Louis, who served in the Army in WW1, worked as a clothing machinist and during the war he worked in the switch room of Leeds G.P.O. and was a volunteer A.R.P. warden.
Sidney attended Leeds College of Commerce and prior to enlistment, he worked as a cutter at a wholesale bespoke tailors.
Sidney was killed at Evrecy, Calvados, France when his Churchill tank was hit near to Hill 112 during the brutal battle in Caen.
